Confirmation or Blackmail

Is it just me? Or does the GOP’s weak attempt to hold up Eric Holders’s confirmation sound more like a blackmail attempt? They can’t vote Mr. Holder in until they have assurances that the potential new Attorney General doesn’t pursue prosecuting any past crimes? Am I getting this right? Am I the only one hearing that the bottom line is that we can’t give you this job unless you promise or assure us that you won’t do your job?
Is this truly the way the GOP wants to play this hand?
And why isn’t anyone calling them on this?
Mr. Holder has already stated that he, like the new president, believes that water boarding is torture. The President also issued an executive order to end torture. So in order to save their behinds or their friends’ behinds is to deny the country an Attorney General? Because the bottom line is that no matter who they put in, if the president wants to investigate the past administration it’ll get done.
However, President Obama has given no indication that he is interested in investigating the Bush Administration, much to my disappointment. So what’s the problem? What disturbs me most is watching this childish temper-tantrum play out. One of the first rules in politics is: Never let them see you sweat. But what the American public is witnessing, from Sarah Palin to John Boehner, is a full fledge ‘I’m-going-to-hold-my-breath-until-I-turn-blue’ fit.
It’s unseemly.
It’s astonishing.
It’s funny as hell.
Okay so I have developed a certain level of Schenfraude when it comes to the GOP. But this whole Holder’s confirmation hold up is pathetic. Tim Geithener, the man who has trouble paying all his taxes, will sail through before the man who has an affinity for the rule of law in this country.
Pathetic.
